My heart goes out to all of my friends and colleagues in Japan at this difficult time. First of all, I want to say how touched the outside world has been by your remarkable composure and dignity in the face of such a serious crisis. Across the world, people have been amazed by the peaceful and respectful behaviour in Japan. At a time when, in many countries, there would be looting, friction and breakdown, you have managed to maintain the social fabric in an admirable manner. You are a great and inspiring model for all of us.

私の心は、困難な時を過ごしているすべての日本の友人たちや仲間たちとともにあります。まず私が言いたいのは、深刻な危機の中にあっても落ち着きと威厳を保ち続けた日本の皆さんが世界に与えた感動のことです。世界の他の場所なら、略奪や騒乱や混乱状態が起こってもおかしくないような惨禍の中にあってなお、穏かさと互いへの思いやりを失わなかった日本の皆さんの様子に、世界中が驚きました。現代に生きる私たちみんなにとっての素晴らしい模範を、あなた方は示してくれたのです。

I sincerely hope that this crisis will lead to a profound reassessment of the direction of development and progress in your country. I hope that people will wake up to the absurdity and cruelty of an economic system that demands an ever-increased consumption of energy. Around the world our minds have been clouded by a political and economic system that traps us in a blind pursuit of global growth through ever-increasing consumerism. This economic growth is anti-thetical to biological growth in the living world. It stifles the very foundations of life, the infinite diversity of the living world, imposing instead a deadly monoculture.

私は心から願っています。この危機をきっかけに、あなた方の国における発展と進歩の方向性が根本的に見直されることを。ますます多くのエネルギー消費を必要とする経済システムの愚かさと残酷さに、人々が気づくことを。日本ばかりではありません。世界中の人々が、消費を煽り続けて経済成長を追求する社会・経済システムの罠にかかって、目を眩まされてきたのです。経済成長なるものは、生物の世界における成長とは相容れないものです。それどころか、経済成長とは、無限の多様性を原理とする生命の世界に、それと正反対の“モノカルチャー（均質性）”という死の原理を持ち込むことによって、自然がよって立つ基盤そのものを突き崩そうとするのです。

I hope that this outdated and corrupt notion about economic growth will not continue to overwhelm us, that we will find guidance in common sense and wisdom, and in listening to our hearts. What has happened in your country has hopefully shaken the firmament of those who have blindly held to their belief in economic progress, and simultaneously strengthened the conviction and the collaboration among those who affirm instead, the very principles of life itself.

このように時代遅れで腐敗した経済成長という考え方が、もうこれ以上人々を押し流さないよう、私は願っています。自分の心の声が、そして自分の中にあるはずの健全な常識や知恵がきっと頼りになります。あなた方の国で起こった大災害は、これまでむやみに経済成長のみを信奉してきた人々の心をも揺さぶったはずです。同時に、経済の原理ではなく、いのちの原理の側に立つ人々の思いを確信に変え、相互の絆を強めることになったことと、私は期待しています。

In this time of crises we need to reach out to one another and the living earth, rebuilding the community fabric and our connections to the plants, the animals and the rest of creation.

この危機の中でこそ、私たちは手をさしのべ合い、コミュニティのつながりを編み直さなければなりません。そして、生きている大地へと向き直り、動植物をはじめとする自然界との一体性を取り戻すのです。
